How to Check an Indian Court Case Status on eCourts

A step-by-step guide to finding case status, orders, hearing information and case history using India’s official eCourts services.

Editorial note: This guide provides general information and practical preparation steps. It is not legal advice and does not create an advocate-client relationship.

eCourts Services is an official platform for accessing information from High Courts and District Courts. It can show case status, hearing dates, case history, party and advocate information, orders and judgments where that information is available in the court system.

The quickest method: use the CNR number

A CNR is a 16-character Case Number Record identifier. On the eCourts Services website, choose the CNR search and enter the identifier without spaces or hyphens. If the number is valid, the service can retrieve the corresponding case record and history.

The CNR may appear on court papers or information previously supplied by an advocate. Check every character carefully; confusing a letter and a number can produce no result.

If you do not know the CNR

The official service provides other search routes. Depending on the court and available data, a case may be located by case number, filing number, party name, advocate details, FIR number, case type or Act. Select the correct court establishment and year before searching. Common names can return several results, so confirm the parties and court before relying on a record.

What to review in the result

  • Case status: whether the record is pending or disposed.
  • Next or previous hearing information: verify that a displayed date is current.
  • Case history: a sequence of recorded proceedings and events.
  • Orders or judgments: downloadable documents when the court has published them.
  • Parties and advocates: names recorded in the court information system.

Why a result may not appear

The court selection, year or case type may be wrong; the spelling may differ; the record may not yet be updated; or the case may belong to another court system. Try the information exactly as shown on the latest court document. Do not create repeated assumptions from an empty search result.

Important limits

An online case-status entry is useful for tracking but it is not a substitute for reading the order, checking the physical or official record where necessary, or obtaining advice about what a procedural entry means. Court information can be updated after a hearing. Confirm urgent deadlines and attendance requirements with the court record or the advocate handling the matter.

Safety tip: use the official eCourts domain. Do not pay an unknown caller who claims that a case can be “removed” from the portal.
